Amended VAT return
In one sentenceCorrecting a previous VAT return after discovering an error in it, such as unrecorded sales or inputs deducted without entitlement, so that the correct tax is paid.
Simply put
If you discover an error in a return you filed, do not wait for an audit. Correct it in the way ZATCA specifies according to the size and effect of the error.
Correcting early reduces penalties, because the unpaid tax accumulates a late-payment penalty for each month until it is paid.
Worked example
A restaurant discovered that a new branch's sales of 20,000 SAR before VAT were not included in last quarter's return.
Undeclared sales20,000 SAR
Unpaid VAT20,000 × 15% = 3,000 SAR
Late-payment penalty per month3,000 × 5% = 150 SAR
Additional VAT to be corrected and paid3,000 SAR
Don't confuse it with
Voluntary disclosureAn amended return corrects the figures in the return, while voluntary disclosure is you informing ZATCA of the error on your own initiative before it discovers it.
