Newly acquired wealth (mal mustafad)
Newly Acquired Wealth
In one sentenceNew wealth that comes into your ownership during the Hawl and is not growth of your original wealth, such as a gift, an inheritance or saved salary. According to many scholars it starts its own Hawl.
Simply put
Your trading profit and the growth of your wealth follow the Hawl of the original wealth and are zakated with it, while new wealth from an independent source starts its Hawl on the day it becomes yours.
To make the calculation easier, some people choose to pay Zakat on everything they have on their original Hawl date, paying the Zakat on the new wealth early. This is permissible.
Example
An employee whose Hawl completes in Ramadan inherited a sum in Dhu al-Hijjah: his inheritance starts its Hawl from Dhu al-Hijjah, unless he chooses to pay its Zakat early with his other wealth in Ramadan.
Don't confuse it with
Trade goodsProfits on trade goods follow the Hawl of their capital, while newly acquired wealth from an independent source has a new Hawl.
