Revenue expenditure
In one sentenceSpending that serves only the current period or keeps an asset in its normal condition, such as routine maintenance and fuel; it is charged to the period's expenses.
Simply put
Changing a car's oil, repairing a broken air conditioner and painting the shop do not make the asset better than it was; they keep it working. So they are an expense of the period and appear in the income statement.
A common mistake is recording major maintenance as an asset to improve profit, or recording a real improvement as an expense so the year's profit looks lower.
Example
A workshop paid 2,500 SAR for routine maintenance of its car lift: this is revenue expenditure in the same month. Had it been recorded as an asset, the month's profit would have appeared 2,500 SAR higher without justification.
Don't confuse it with
Capital expenditureCapital expenditure increases the asset's benefit or life beyond one year, so it is added to its cost.
