Zakat on gold and silver

In one sentenceZakat on the gold or silver a person owns when it reaches the Nisab (85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver) and a Hawl has passed, at 2.5%.

Simply put

You weigh the gold you own. If it reaches 85 grams or more and a Hawl has passed over it, you pay 2.5% of its value at the price on the Hawl day.

Gold bars and saved gold coins are zakatable. For jewelry a woman wears, scholars hold two views, so ask qualified scholars.

Worked example

A woman owns saved 24-karat gold bars weighing 120 grams. For illustration, assume the price per gram on the Hawl day is 250 SAR.

Weight above the Nisab?120 g > 85 g
Value120 × 250 = 30,000 SAR
Zakat 2.5%30,000 × 2.5%
Zakat due750 SAR

Formula: Zakat = weight × price per gram on the Hawl day × 2.5%

Don't confuse it with

NisabThe Nisab is the threshold at which Zakat starts, and Zakat on gold is what you actually pay once you reach it.
