Stock card

In one sentenceA record for each item showing its movements by date: receipts, issues and the balance after each movement, and usually the cost, warehouse and document.

Simply put

The stock card is the item's account statement: just as a customer statement shows invoices and payments, the card shows everything that came in and went out of the item.

You refer to it whenever there is a count difference to find out when the difference started, or to track the item's cost and how it changes with each purchase.

Worked example

A restaurant tracks the frying oil item in its storeroom over a week.

Balance at the start of the week50 tins
+ Received from the supplier30 tins
− Issued to the kitchen45 tins
Balance at the end of the week = 50 + 30 − 4535 tins
