Notice period

In one sentenceThe period in which one party to the employment contract informs the other in writing that it wants to end the contract, before the termination takes effect.

Simply put

The employee does not leave suddenly, and the business does not end the contract suddenly: the party that wants to end it sends written notice, and the relationship continues with pay until the period ends.

This period helps with handing over work and finding a replacement. Not respecting it may lead to compensation for the other party. Its length and rules are in the contract and the Saudi Labor Law and its regulations, so check them for the details.

Example

An accountant at a factory resigned with written notice. During the notice period he handed the month-end closing files to the replacement accountant, and his salary stayed in the payroll until the last day.

Don't confuse it with

Probation periodProbation is at the start of the contract, and notice is when it ends.
