Sub-account

In one sentenceA detail account that sits under a higher account in the chart of accounts and to which transactions are actually posted, such as a branch cash account under the cash account.

Simply put

The chart of accounts is a tree: at the top are general groups such as “Assets,” and at the bottom are detail accounts that receive the entries. These detail accounts are the sub-accounts.

Whenever you need to know a figure precisely (each branch's cash box, each bank, or each customer), create a sub-account for it, and you get both the detail and the total.

Example

In a store's chart of accounts: account 11 “Cash” is a parent account, and under it are 1101 “Main cash box,” 1102 “North branch cash box” and 1103 “Bank account”; entries are posted to these three accounts, and the balance of 11 is their total.

Don't confuse it with

Control accountEntries are not usually posted directly to the control account; it takes its balance from its sub-accounts.
